Create What Lasts

About

I have been thinking for some time about what actually lasts.

Not lasts forever. Very little does.

I mean something simpler.

What continues creating value after the original effort is over?

I started noticing this question in very different parts of life.

A good investment can compound for years.

Something learned twenty years ago can suddenly help solve a problem today.

A relationship is built through thousands of small interactions, but eventually there is something there that didn't exist before.

Health works in a similar way. So does capability. So does character.

And then there are other things that consume enormous amounts of time and attention and seem to leave almost nothing behind.

I became interested in the difference.

That is really where Create What Lasts came from.

This site is my notebook of things I have gradually come to believe.

Some come from experience. Some from mistakes. Some from books. Some from work, investing, raising children, relationships, or simply noticing something in ordinary life and continuing to think about it.

I don't expect everything here to be correct.

In fact, I hope some of it changes.

If experience shows me that something I believed was wrong, then the idea should change—not reality.

I am also not trying to turn every observation into a lesson.

Sometimes something is simply worth noticing.

But I have found myself returning again and again to the same question:

What is worth building because it continues creating value long after the initial effort?

I don't know that there is one answer.

Maybe the point is to keep paying attention.

And to write down what I discover.
